The only reason why this is not #1 is because #1 (virus protection) can involve ID theft and could cost you thousands of dollars and years of paperwork. However, I’ve seen time after time how easily people can lose their important data like their family photos, financial data, and other personal data. As a part of my regular routine I ask my customers if they are backing up their data. I never have recorded these statistics but it was well under 25%. Of these 25 percenters I have only had a few people ever tell me they verified their backups. This is like the ‘modern day version’ of a fire in your home! Did it get the family photos album or not? Data storage fails all the time; this is why there is a multi-billion dollar backup industry targeted just for the home user. But will your backup actually restore your data (files) as expected. Always verify your backups! Not every day but at least once a month. The most dependable backup system is a cloud app like Carbonite.
